Getty Images, one of the leading stock photos repositories, is now filing for bankruptcy. The growing AI-generated images have led the business to take a major hit, weighing heavily on the business. In an October 12 announcement, the company announced its agreement to secure $533M in investment and adopt a private ownership stance. The process may conclude by the end of this year. This announcement has put the Getty stock price in focus as GETY shares have ended up shedding 99.5% of their value in the last four years.

Getty Images Restructuring Targets Its Debt Burdens

Per the recent filings, Getty Images is approximately $2.1B in total debt as of June 30, 2026. Its reported revenue of $229.1M for the quarter, down 2.5% from a year earlier, and net loss of $85.8M. Under the new restructuring conditions, affiliates of the Getty Family and Koch Enquiry Development have committed to providing $533M in investment. The plan also includes changes in existing debt, including extending maturities and reducing interest costs in certain borrowings.
Getty Images plans to use prepacked chapter 11 to process its restructuring. This method allows a company to negotiate much of the plan with creditors before filing for bankruptcy.

How AI-Generated Images Pushed Getty Images Out of Business
Getty Images built its business around licensed photographs, videos, and editorial content for publishers and businesses.

Generative AI capabilities have now introduced new ways to develop photos and other required media, putting Getty Images’ core USP in jeopardy. Now that AI can create such components out of scratch, businesses have opted out of purchasing Getty Images offerings, pushing the company to encounter new lows.
“Then AI image generators arrived. They make the same images in seconds, and Getty’s stock photo sites, Agency and iStock, came under pressure. Getty went to court. It sued Stability AI, the maker of Stable Diffusion, over its images being used to train the AI. A UK High Court judge largely ruled against it. Its planned merger with its rival Shutterstock then collapsed, leaving Getty alone with heavy debt and growing competition from AI. By August, Getty pulled its financial guidance. Its debt was $2.1 billion, and its market value is now just $20.74 million. Now the Getty family and Koch Equity Development will own 100% of what is left. Getty spent decades making billions by selling images. AI made it possible to create similar images in seconds. And now a company once worth $4.8 billion has lost almost its entire value.”
In addition to this, Gety Stock forecast has been put into the spotlight amid the new restructuring. Gety shares have lost nearly all their valuation and are now standing at $0.0081.
MarketCapOf’s comparison tool shows that Getty Images (GETY) and Shutterstock (SSTK) both recorded declines in 2025. From January 1 to December 31, 2025, Getty Images shares decreased by 0.64x, while Shutterstock shares fell by 0.65x over the same period. The comparison suggests that both companies faced stock-market pressure.
