Chipotle Stock Jumps 6% as Starbucks Eyes Tie-Up With Nearly $50B in Sales

Chipotle stock

Chipotle stock jumped about 6% Thursday after a takeover report raised the possibility of Brian Niccol buying the restaurant chain he once ran. Starbucks (SBUX) stock finished nearly flat, leaving investors to weigh what such a purchase would mean for its ongoing turnaround. The proposed combination would bring two familiar brands under one roof, but their recent stock performance tells a less straightforward story. Even after Thursday’s rally, Chipotle has considerable ground to recover.

Chipotle Stock Rallies on Starbucks Takeover Interest

Starbucks has worked with advisers in recent months on a potential proposal for Chipotle. Whether it submitted a formal offer or is still pursuing the transaction remains unclear.

Starbucks’ takeover of Chipotle would combine businesses with nearly $50 billion in annual sales. This figure describes their combined revenue, rather than the price Starbucks would pay for the burrito chain.

Niccol’s familiarity with Chipotle gives the report an unusual twist. He ran the company for six years before joining Starbucks in 2024. Buying it would put his former business back under his oversight, alongside the coffee chain he was hired to revive.

Starbucks Still Leads the Year-to-Date Comparison

The jump in the Chipotle share price has softened an otherwise weaker year for shareholders. A stock performance comparison using MarketCapOf’s ROI tool covering January 1 through October 9 shows SBUX stock at approximately 1.10 times its starting value, against 0.87 times for CMG stock. Those rounded multiples imply a gain of roughly 10% for Starbucks and a decline of about 13% for Chipotle.

This leaves Starbucks stock performance ahead by approximately 23 percentage points over the selected period. Chipotle stock performance has improved with the latest rally, but remains negative for the year. The comparison measures price changes. It should not be read as a dividend-inclusive total return.

A Restaurant Merger Would Test Niccol’s Priorities

For Starbucks shareholders, the question is how an acquisition would fit alongside the work already underway. Analysts noted that a purchase could require substantial borrowing or new shares, while Starbucks is still spending on staffing and store improvements. Niccol knows Chipotle well, but that familiarity alone does not settle the financial case.

Investors have priced in some takeover optimism. They are still waiting for an offer, a purchase price, and an explanation of how the businesses would work together.
