Robinhood Stock Sinks Despite Record Revenue, Coinbase Denies Breach

Robinhood stock

Robinhood’s expanding business delivered record quarterly revenue, yet investors found reasons to sell. The brokerage is making more money from prediction markets than crypto trading, a shift that helped cushion a sharp slowdown in digital assets. But the latest Robinhood earnings showed pressure elsewhere in the accounts. In other news, Coinbase sought to reassure customers after a vendor security incident, putting both trading platforms under scrutiny as their shares remain below where they started the year.

Robinhood’s transaction revenue reached $867 million in Q3, with growth in options and prediction markets helping offset the year-over-year decline in crypto revenue. Robinhood stock fell about 7% in after-hours trading on October 27. Diluted earnings came in at $0.51 per share, below the $0.55 estimate cited by the agency.

Revenue rose 12% year over year to $1.42 billion, but net income declined 14% to $476 million. Adjusted EPS, which excludes certain items, was $0.60. Higher expenses and a $67 million unrealized investment loss weighed on profit. The loss, primarily linked to Robinhood Ventures Fund I, reduced reported earnings by about seven cents per share.

Prediction Markets Help Offset Crypto’s Decline

Robinhood prediction markets generated $173 million in revenue, more than six times the year-earlier figure. This exceeded both equities trading revenue of $121 million and crypto revenue of $120 million. Robinhood CFO Shiv Verma said,

“Prediction markets is almost a $500-million-a-year business already, and so growing incredibly nicely, and it’s less than two years old because it came out at the start of the 2024 election.”

Crypto revenue fell 55% year over year, though options remained strong, bringing in $399 million. Robinhood now has 14 business lines that have reached $100 million in annualized revenue, according to its quarterly release.

This shows newer products helping Robinhood grow through a weaker period for crypto trading. They haven’t removed the pressure on profitability.

Coinbase Addresses Data Breach Concerns

Coinbase said a security incident at analytics vendor Amplitude affected a small subset of customers’ contact information. Addressing Coinbase data breach concerns, the exchange said it found no evidence of unauthorized access to its own systems and that customer funds were unaffected. Affected users and regulators are being notified.

Its denial therefore concerns its own systems. Some customer contact data was affected through the outside provider.

The same investment in Coinbase stock would be worth $1,360.80, down approximately 32%. Robinhood performed better by roughly 14.7 percentage points, although both investments lost value.

The comparison covers the year-to-date. The earnings release and vendor incident are recent developments, so neither alone explains the stocks’ performance across the entire period.
