- Gold and silver prices fell amid inflation concerns and interest-rate uncertainty, raising questions about the gold price crash and why gold prices are falling
- The silver price drop was sharper than gold’s decline, reflecting silver’s industrial exposure and broader precious metals selling
- The gold market outlook depends on interest rates, the US dollar and upcoming Fed decisions, while analyst recovery predictions remain uncertain
Gold and silver prices have come under new pressure, as a multitude of macroeconomic pressures continue to weigh on both the assets. Nearly $900B worth of capital has reportedly been wiped out of the precious metals arena as the gold price fell by 2.5% while the silver price dropped by 5.25%. What is happening in the precious metals sector as of late? Why is the gold price dropping so rapidly?

Why Are Gold Prices Falling?

One of the primary reasons why gold prices are falling as of late is the changing outlook for US interest rates. Higher oil prices have raised inflation concerns again. This has led investors to speculate whether the Federal Reserve may keep rates elevated for longer.
Gold does not pay interest; hence, it may become less attractive when bonds offer higher yields. Higher Treasury yields have also been a thorn for gold prices as they increase the cost of holding bullion. At the same time, a stronger US dollar may also impact gold and silver prices, making them appear less attractive as of late.
The latest decline has now put the gold price at around $4,016 per ounce in the October 23 spot-market snapshot, down significantly from its earlier January high of around $5,596. The latest silver price drop has also been a topic of debate among investors, as the metal has traded at lower levels. Silver futures settled at $54.764 per ounce on October 22.

Why Is Silver Falling More Sharply?
While both gold and silver prices continue to suffer, silver, on the other hand, has taken a serious price dip as of late. The primary reason for this change may partly reflect investors’ reassessment of the metal in its industrial domain, alongside broader selling across precious metals.
Silver can also experience larger price swings as compared to gold, as its role as an industrial metal makes it vulnerable to sharper silver price drops and swings.
Analysts Adjust Gold and Silver Price Outlook
According to Rashad Hajiyev, a leading metal expert, the silver price is currently under a descending bullish wedge since the start of this year. He believes that the silver downside is limited and that the metal may change course sometime in the near future.
Talking about gold price crash dynamics, Hajiyev commented that gold price might form a major bottom during the next FOMC meeting.
But he expects the metal to bounce back and resume its bullish pace from November onwards, changing the gold market outlook.
