- Tokenized stocks are moving closer to mainstream finance as Bitwise launches automated portfolios that let eligible investors hold tokenized US stocks in their own wallets
- Japan is exploring blockchain based settlement for stocks and government bonds, with the aim of making financial transactions faster and reducing existing settlement delays
- Blockchain technology is expanding beyond crypto, with Bitwise focusing on asset management and Japan exploring its use for traditional market infrastructure
Traditional finance is now standing at a precipice of change. The domain is now evolving rapidly, with major stock indices planning an on-chain path. In this process, Bitwise has launched automated portfolios around tokenized US stocks. At the same time, Japan is now preparing to study a blockchain-based system for settling stocks and Japanese government bonds. Such rapid developments show how quickly the world is figuring out ways to adapt to an “onchain life,” eliminating delays and hurdles that otherwise would have thwarted progress in the physical structure of the process. These two developments are opposite in nature but are adept at outlining the importance of blockchains in today’s age and world.

Bitwise Brings Tokenized Stocks To Investors

Bitwise has come up with a new invention, an idea of automated token portfolios. This development will enable eligible investors outside the US to access tokenized stocks directly held in their wallets. The first product rollout focuses on the Mag7 stocks and also includes artificial intelligence and robotics stocks as well. The portfolio will use Coinbase’s tokenized US stocks on Base. This process further includes Glider’s assistance, making use of it to adjust the holdings to match Bitwise model portfolios.
Speaking about it in depth, Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan shared:
“For over a century, getting a professional model meant handing your assets to a fund. ATPs mean you can keep the assets in your own wallet, and the model comes to you. ATPs unlock a new way for people to access thematic exposures more quickly and precisely than many traditional structures. We’re just scratching the surface.”
The process further helps investors keep custody of their tokenized assets rather than putting their money into a traditional pooled fund.

Japan Now Plans Blockchain Settlement for Stocks and Bonds
As the world increasingly moves towards becoming onchain, Japan is also planning a path to explore this domain. The country’s Financial Services Agency and major financial institutions are preparing to launch a study group for a blockchain-based payment and settlement system covering stocks and Japanese bonds.
The purpose of this study group is to explore allowing transactions to settle in real time rather than waiting for existing settlement periods. Japanese stock trades currently take time, processing in about two days after executing the transaction. JGB, on the other hand, usually takes a day to process transactions. The primary intention of the group is to study whether these delays can be expedited via blockchain tech.
However, this is a planned project and not a nationwide blockchain market. The study group is expected to work towards a proper plan around early 2027. If the project moves forward, implementation could potentially come in the early 2030s rather than by 2030.
Blockchain Tech Is Slowly Becoming Mainstream
Bitwise and Japan’s blockchain interventions strongly suggest that the world is now considering blockchain a trusted tech ally. Bitwise Investments focuses on how investors manage their assets, while Japan is focusing on the settlement aspect, pushing for speedy processing.
These examples are proving how the blockchain technology is now becoming mainstream, with its use cases evolving rapidly with time. The tech is breaking away from its “only crypto” usage, penetrating deep into other commercial sectors to prove its diversity.
