The DeFi sector is evolving faster than ever, as it continues to become a leading aspect of the digital finance domain. A new segment is now penetrating into the sector in the form of crypto vaults. Per a new FT report, crypto vaults are rising in numbers as investors continue to chase higher yields and returns. Deposits into these products have risen to hit $10B, up from $4B last year. This growth in the DeFi lending domain shows how investors are ready to explore complex ways of earning income from their crypto holdings.

Crypto vaults are becoming an attractive method for users to earn income on their crypto holdings. These vaults allow users to deposit their digital assets, which are then allocated by curators according to specific strategies, often involving lending. The end goal of this process is to increase vault returns without requiring investors to manage every transaction. The typical yields accrued lie between 3% and 10%, while some higher-risk options offer yields above 20%. These are reported returns, not guaranteed earnings.

This type of structure is enabling lending strategies to be easier to access. However, the process requires investors to depend on curators, lending protocols, and smart contracts to handle their funds. S&P Global Ratings launched its Vault Risk Assessment framework on October 4, 2026, to help market participants assess risks when making decisions related to crypto vaults and lending.

Risks Associated With This Trade

As crypto vault numbers continue to rise, investors also face the risk of losing their deposited funds. DeFi lending risks become a crucial part of this topic. As digital asset lending continues to evolve, the DeFi lending risks are also surfacing on the radar. Smart contract bugs, security breaches, poor asset management, and problems with assets used as collateral are some common problems that the domain has encountered as of late.

Liquidity is another major concern for this domain. If a vault’s investments cannot be converted into cash or withdrawn immediately, investors may struggle to access their own funds. Some DeFi lending or digital asset lending practices involve difficult-to-value collateral, which can become an issue during sudden market declines.

The FT later reported how US and European regulators are examining the sector in detail. The regulators are assessing risk profiles and whether crypto vaults should face closer oversight. However, the fact that the crypto vaults are rising in popularity suggests the level of risk investors are willing to take to try out lucrative yet risky ways to earn new income
