ENS Proposes New .eth Registration System as Ethereum Advances Transaction Safety

Ethereum price

Ethereum is currently busy on two separate developments working towards a singular goal of protecting its users’ interests. A new proposal to upgrade the Ethereum name service has been put forward for the DAO support. At the same time, the Ethereum foundation has been putting out research to make ETH transactions more secure, reflecting the core requirement of making the network robust against different malicious elements. The proposed ENSv2 upgrade would change how .ETH domains are managed. In addition to this, the upgrade is intended to give greater control to ENS DAO over its upgraded contracts.

ENS Founder Nick Johnson has submitted a draft proposal asking for ENS DAO to approve the ENSv2 upgrade. The proposal is currently in its draft form, and a formal onchain vote is yet to be scheduled per the latest reports. ENS is a naming system introduced on Ethereum. It helps users interact with Ethereum without relying on long hexadecimal addresses.

The proposed ENSv2 upgrade will help replace the current registry structure by introducing a flexible system. Under the current proposed draft, individuals may have their own registries, giving owners more control over their subdomains. For instance, an owner could allow someone to update a subdomain’s settings without granting that person permission to transfer ownership.

This transition may also end up temporarily impacting the new .ETH domain registrations. The upgrade may end up halting registration for several hours while records are getting synchronized. Existing domain holders are not expected to need an immediate migration.

Ethereum Foundation’s Efforts To Keep ETH Transactions Secure

The Ethereum Foundation is also working extensively on aligning transaction safety on the mainnet. The foundation’s Trillion Dollar Security initiative focuses on mapping security strengths and attack risks across Ethereum, including blind signing, wallet security, smart contracts and infrastructure. The initiative aims to identify areas where the network’s security can be improved; it does not mean that a new transaction-safety system is already in place. The Ethereum Foundation described the scope of this work in its announcement:

“Mapping the landscape of security strengths and attack vectors across every domain and layer of Ethereum’s technology stack. We will gather input from across the ecosystem and synthesize this into a security overview report that will help us identify focus areas. This mapping will span a wide range of domains, including UX (blind signing, frontend security), wallet security (firmware issues, supply chain attacks), smart contract security (developer tooling, standard libraries), infrastructure (cloud security, dependency management), consensus and protocol security (DOS risks, stake centralization), internet infra (DNS-level censorship), and more.”

Ethereum’s long-term outlook is also drawing attention from institutional investors. As Ethereum continues to dive in the center of the tokenization debate, bullish ETH forecasts have now started to pour in aggressively in the market. For instance, Tom Lee has shared how eth gas power could save $7.5K if it goes mainstream within the crypto industry.

MarketCapOf’s ROI Calculator shows that a hypothetical $1,000 investment in Ethereum (ETH) at $2,507.04 would grow to approximately $2,991.58 if ETH reached $7,500. This would represent a profit of $1,991.58, or 199.16%, before fees.
