The company also strategically allocates capital to mortgage-backed securities and other related investments. FHLMC's operations are structured into two distinct divisions. The Single-family segment is tasked with the acquisition, securitization, and guarantee of loans for individual residences. This division additionally oversees the associated credit risk, manages its investment portfolios linked to mortgages, handles single-family securitization processes, and performs treasury functions. Its client base includes a wide array of financial entities, such as various banking institutions (commercial, regional, community), credit unions, mortgage banking firms, housing finance agencies, savings institutions, and non-depository lenders. Conversely, the Multifamily segment focuses on the procurement, disposition, securitization, and backing of loans and securities pertaining to multi-unit residential properties, notably through its specialized K and SB certificate programs. This division further extends its activities to encompass the creation and guarantee of diverse securitization and credit risk transfer products, along with providing other mortgage-related assurances. Its clientele comprises a broad spectrum of institutional investors and financial organizations, including banks, insurance providers, asset managers, central banks, pension funds, governmental entities, REITs, and brokerage firms. Established in 1970, the corporation maintains its headquarters in McLean, Virginia.
