The Wisdom of the Crowd: Why Prediction Market Prices Beat Polls and Pundits

Prediction markets vs polls and pundits showing how crowd wisdom real-time data and market incentives improve prediction market accuracy

Individuality is certainly an admirable trait. We all want to stand out in a crowd of what we perceive as drones. Poems, songs and novels have been written about this desire to be our own person, take the road less traveled. But there is something to be said about following the herd. After all, a sheep that strays usually does not end up in a very favorable position.

It isn’t necessarily right to say that standing out is bad. But there is also something positive to be said about the wisdom of crowds. When a majority of people agrees on one thing, it is likely because there is something there to agree on. That is the philosophy that has made prediction markets such a success. There are those that wonder why prediction markets on PUBS.com manage to outdo pundits and polls when it comes to prices. The answer has a lot to do with the wisdom of crowds.

Betting on it All

Do you have strong opinions on the next Taylor Swift tour date? Are you convinced that your home team is going to win the Super Bowl in 2027? Do you think that the up-and-coming Avengers: Doomsday movie is going to break the box office record? Regardless of where you stand on these questions, one thing remains true, people are betting on them. Bettors are not traveling to Vegas or Atlantic City to wager on these odds. They are doing right from their own home.

Prediction markets allow customers to buy contracts, which they can then trade depending on their value. And what are these contracts about? Literally anything. Prediction markets give their fans the opportunity to buy shares on the likelihood of any event’s outcome. The new sector is entirely built around peer-to-peer interaction, thus creating an environment that nurtures both competition and camaraderie.

But what some experts have noted is that these prediction markets tend to outperform traditional polls and pundits. The question is why?

Eliminating Bias from the Equation

It is no secret that the media portals, and therefore the pundits associated with them, tend to have clear bias. Political beliefs tend to inform most of our private thoughts as well, and so TV pundits will often attempt to placate the portals that they associate with by sharing opinions that fit the mainstream beliefs of their viewers. That is not the case with the staff at prediction markets. The people behind these platforms tend to be anonymous, and their customers are a diverse crowd from all walks of life. The need for political, or any other kind of bias does not exist.

It is easy to draw parallels between prediction markets and the betting sector in that regard. For many years, people have noted that sportsbooks have yielded much more accurate odds about the outcome of sporting tournaments, as well as political events. Those who frequent betting shops believe that the reason is because the odds makers remove any sort of personal bias from the equation, resulting in a fair and accurate analysis.

Response Rates and Lag Time

Traditional polls require days of work to craft. Researchers have to conduct the investigation, discuss the topic at hand with the people being polled, gather all of the data, analyze it and then condense it into a poll. That means that there are times when polls are already outdated before they are even released. Critics have brought up this issue on various occasions in the past, and will likely continue to voice their disapproval with how polls are conducted in the future.

Prediction market fix this issue by operating 24/7, and continuously pouring over new data. The people involved will listen to debates, read new articles, and pay attention even to the most obscure podcasts if it means coming up with a more accurate number. Because they update continuously, the danger of becoming outdated is never truly present. Which is another reason why these portals tend to be more accurate than polls.

The Wisdom of Crowds

It is not difficult to see the similarities between the trading sector and prediction markets. These websites function similarly to the crypto market or the stock exchange. That means that much like how the value of different crypto coins changes based on public perception, so too do the contracts that prediction markets put out. This opens the opportunity for the share on a contract to rise based on the opinions of experts who may have some deeper knowledge on the subject.

Because the prediction market is fair game to everyone, knowledgeable traders or even insiders could invest in shares that they know are a sure thing. Some of them may even notice blind spots that the rest of the customers would be unable to catch, and thus move the market in the right direction just by participating.

The Participants Play a Role

We must also acknowledge the effect that the participants have on the accuracy of prediction market odds as oppose to polls. We can take a simple sports event as a great example. If a fan of the Chicago Bears were to answer an online or offline poll regarding who they think will win the Super Bowl next year, they may answer the Bears out of a sense of passion or duty. But if a Bears fan were to visit a prediction market, they would not be so flippant in their choice.

The reason why is rather obvious. Prediction markets offer a financial incentive to be as honest as possible. Even the most hardcore Bears fan would not, and indeed should not, risk their own financial wellbeing just to prove a point about their fandom. It is far more likely that a customer at a prediction market is going to go with the odds-on favorite choice, rather than what their heart or their gut is telling them. This honesty brought forth by financial incentive is one of the main reasons that prediction markets, and indeed betting sites, tend to offer a more accurate outcome then polls and TV pundits.
