The company's primary drug candidate, NP-120, acts as an N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor glutamate antagonist. This compound specifically targets the NMDA-type subunit 2B (Glu2NB) and also demonstrates agonist activity for the Sigma-1 receptor, a chaperone protein elevated during endoplasmic reticulum stress. Furthermore, Algernon is advancing AP-188, a psychedelic agent from the tryptamine family, for treating ischemic stroke in humans. Preclinical investigations for AP-188, as part of their stroke clinical research program, are underway through a collaboration with Charles River Laboratories. Established in 2015, Algernon Pharmaceuticals Inc. is headquartered in Vancouver, Canada.
