AcelRx also develops ZALVISO, a pre-programmed, patient-managed analgesia system that enables hospital patients experiencing moderate-to-severe acute pain to self-administer sufentanil sublingual tablets for their pain relief. In its development pipeline, AcelRx is progressing ARX-02, which is currently in Phase 2 clinical trials, targeting sudden, intense cancer-related pain in individuals who are tolerant to opioid medications. Another candidate, 4ARX-03, is being investigated for its utility in providing mild sedation and pain relief during various medical procedures that might cause discomfort. Beyond acute pain, AcelRx's investigational portfolio features Niyad, a regional anticoagulant designed for use in external blood circulation systems. Furthermore, LTX-608, a nafamostat formulation for direct intravenous infusion, is being explored as an experimental treatment for a range of conditions, including COVID, severe lung injury (acute respiratory distress syndrome), widespread blood clotting (disseminated intravascular coagulation), and acute pancreatitis. The company was founded in 2005 and initially operated under the name SuRx, Inc., before officially rebranding as AcelRx Pharmaceuticals, Inc. in August 2006. It is headquartered in Hayward, California.
