Meanwhile, its Base Metals division specializes in mining nickel, along with valuable by-products such as copper, gold, silver, cobalt, and various other precious metals. Established in 1942 and headquartered in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the company adopted its current name, Vale S.A., in May 2009, having previously been known as Companhia Vale do Rio Doce.
